US Airways Card Bonus Is Bumped To 50,000 Miles, AF Not Waived & An Even Better Offer Available

The Offer

Direct link to offer

  • Receive 50,000 US Airways miles (soon to be AA miles) as a sign up bonus after you make your first purchase

It’s also possible to get the same offer, but with an added bonus of 10,000 anniversary miles on your first anniversary by using this link. The link is intended for preferred members only (silver status and higher), but there are data points (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 of non-preferred members getting the sign up bonus of 50,000 (was previously lower, but should hold true). Obviously it’s too early to tell if they will also get the anniversary miles or not. It’s also important to note that people who aren’t preferred members were also denied (1), so it’s up to you to decide if it’s worth the risk. Use this link for that offer.

  • 0% Introductory APR for the first 15 months

  • First checked bag is free for you and up to 4 companions on domestic flights operated by US Airways
  • Priority zone two boarding on all US Airways flights

Our Verdict

Given that US Airways and American Airlines are going to merge soon, you’re probably going to be wondering what will happen to these US Airways cards. In short they will be rebranded AAdvantage aviator cards, you can read more about this product change here. I’m not surprised that Barclays are making a play for more cardholders, once the merger is finalized they will no longer be able to issue cards for US Airways/American Airlines and will lose their biggest airline co-branded partner.

50,000 miles after first purchase is a nice sign up bonus, the main downside is the annual fee of $89 not being waived. I’m not exactly craving US Airways or AA miles at the moment, but I’m going to get this card for two reasons:

  • Barclay usually pulls your TransUnion credit report, recently I’ve hardly had any inquiries with them. I try my best to spread my new account inquiries between the three nationwide consumer reporting agencies (Equifax, Experian & TransUnion) but TransUnion is by far the least used.
  • Barclay credit cards are churnable. I’ve had this card in the past, but I’m confident I’ll get the sign up bonus again.

Originally I was going to go for the preferred bonus, but I suspect that I will not get instant approval and that I’ll need to call the reconsideration line. I want to give the customer service representative as few reasons as possible to deny me, so it’s not worth the risk for me. If the anniversary bonus was ongoing, then I probably would have taken the risk but I don’t think it’s worth it for only 10k miles for $89. If you’re confident that you’ll get instantly approved or you have preferred status, then I’d definitely recommend using that link.

It’s also not outside the realms of possibility that Barclay will increase the sign up bonus even more before the merger, but I think the chances of this happening are rather small. Are you going to apply for this card? Why or why not? If you’re going to apply, will you use the public link or the preferred offer? Let us know in the comments.

Doc, another data point for you or the readers out there.

I had this card – applied in Jan 2014, cancelled it in late Oct 2014. Just applied again when I heard about the offer and got insta-approved for the 50K+10K version. I have a fairly high income, credit score in the 770s and no recent TransUnion pulls that I know of other than the Jan 2014.

Hope this is helpful for anyone considering out there.

Hi. A recently converted loyal reader here. Appreciate the info this blog offers and have certainly benefited in many ways.

One comment I have is the lack of date stamp on posts… or is it just me not able to find it? It’s not a big deal for the ongoing news as I check your site nearly daily. But once in a while I search for certain content or get your internal links to older posts, it gets rather difficult to tell how old they are. Since a large portion of your posts are time-sensitive, I suppose many of us would benefit if there can be a more obvious time stamp on each blog entry.

Thanks for the consideration!

One thing to remember is that US Airways has some of the worst Mileage Award telephone service in the industry. It not unusual to wait +30 minutes on hold before you can get a human voice or in many cases a message saying to call back later due to heavy call volume…lol…

My 3rd card was approved with my 2nd is still active.

1st card, applied on Feb 2013, closed on Jan 2014
2nd card, applied on March 2014, still active, barely use it, but put 500 bucks for the 99 certificate, total spend less than 600 dollars.
3rd, just applied, approved, with 7.5k limit, lower than my second card but still acceptable( Chase gave me 500 on my freedom card:(

Hope I can get my 3nd bonus, I have one frontier cc with Barclay, total four cards.

Any data points on churnability for people who currently have the card open? Can I apply again to grab an extra 50k before they stop accepting new apps?

William Charles, maybe in the future you can do a review of which CC issuers use which CC reporting agencies and how to optimize CC apps?

Really good analysis of the Barclay US Air CC. And good point on trying to spread hard pulls over the 3 major credit reporting agencies. This can dramatically improve the approval rate on new CC apps.

I have had a Barclay US Air preferred card open for 1 year and I was approved for this offer.

They’re running a promo for 15k bonus miles with $500 in spend each of Nov/Dec/Jan, so preference is to grab the extra 50k and keep open the current one for the 15k promo and the ongoing 10k bonus.

I’ll probably grab the public link and just do the online app. Any idea how long it should stick around?

Normally it is recommended that you wait at least 6 months between Barclay CC apps for churning. Yes, you can apply and possibly receive the 50k bonus. Barclay says that the 50k bonus is for a limited time. Some bloggers say that Barclay will stop taking new US Air CC apps after Dec 31, 2014. As always YMMV…Good luck…
