USAlliance Card Earns 6% On Grocery Purchases Until End Of 2023 ($2,000 Cap Added)

Update 12/29/22: USAlliance has now added a $2,000 monthly spending cap on the 6% earning. Hat tip to myFICO

The USAlliance Credit card used to advertise 3% back on all purchases, this was dropped and then reinstated until the end of 2022. A new promotion has started from 09/01/22 until 12/31/23 offering 6% back on supermarket purchases. The terms state:

As of 09/01/2022, all eligible grocery store or supermarket transactions on USALLIANCE Visa Signature Cards will earn five (5) points per dollar above the standard base point until 12/31/2023. Maximum points earned per eligible grocery transaction is six (6). Eligible grocery store or supermarket transactions are defined at the sole discretion of USALLIANCE Financial. Charges or transactions may be added to, or removed from, eligible charges and transactions at any time. No points are earned for finance charges, fees, cash advances, convenience checks, foreign transaction currency charges, or credit life and/or disability (payment protection) insurance charges posted to their account.

Obviously 6% back with no caps is great.

Finally removed any grocery upside language on this card. As it stands it’s now just a standard 2% card. Sock drawer bound.

  • Effective 01/01/2024, USALLIANCE Visa Signature Cards earn an additional one (1) bonus point per eligible transaction (for a total of two (2) points per transaction) until 12/31/2024.

Any news on what the cashback will be for 2024?

Just chatted to support, and they said as of Jan 1 the cashback rate will go to 2% on everything, and no special grocery category.

It’s always possible this could change though. One year they updated the cashback rates in March for that year!

Here’s what I got from chat:
“Hello, at this time we have no updated information regarding the Rewards beyond 2023.”
“Unfortunately, I do not have any information when an announcement will be made.”

Interesting. Maybe they will announce something on Jan 1.

I just did my last grocery shop of the year, and made the points up to 2,500 for cashing-out in anticipation of the end of the promotion.

If there’s nothing interesting for the new year, this card could be going into the sock drawer.

I guess it’s official. They have changed the website today from:
“Get rewarded every time you spend. Earn 6 points for every dollar on eligible grocery store purchases1, 2 points for every dollar on all other eligible purchases2, plus perks on travel and purchase discounts.”

to
“Get rewarded every time you spend. Earn 2 points for every dollar on all eligible purchases2, plus perks on travel and purchase discounts.”

Yes, I saw that.

I seem to remember they did something similar once before, and then introduced a new bonus rate later in the year.

This is going into my sock drawer for now as 2% cashback is not useful to me.

Datapoint here: Wal-Mart works, so do all regular grocery stores. Anything that codes as MCC:5411. For example, Kroger’s, Trader Joe’s, Aldi’s, etc.
Costco & Sam’s Club *DO NOT WORK* as they code for Wholesale clubs.
Oddball “grocery” stores, like my local Marathon Gas station (in-store) *DO NOT WORK* either. It coded as MCC:5499 (Miscellaneous Food Stores – Speciality). No idea on anything else.

I suppose it’s safe to assume USAlliance does NOT consider Walmart a grocery store or supermarket, correct?

I was receiving 6x at a WMT SuperCenter until my shutdown.

What exactly was shut down? The card itself? Your WMT Supercenter? Your account completely? Did you only get 3x on the purchase then?

The shut down is on rewards. Can still use the credit card but zero rewards for any purchases.

Did they send you an email Charles? or when you login to the rewards portal does it show 0 for each purchase in the points earned? Did you abuse this somehow (if you don’t want to say that’s fine – just trying to avoid this happening to me). Like a ton of gift cards at grocery stores or something?

They sent me an email on December 9th stating I violated the terms due to MS. In the email it highlighted the MS clause. When I try to access the rewards portal, I am not able to login. On the USAlliance portal, it shows my rewards as around 26,000 points but no access to them.
I started with gradual increasing my VGC purchases from WMT and throwing in some miscellaneous items. I have a $15K CL. I was up to $2.5K in VGC purchases weekly. I was attempting to stay under the radar but failed. I know that there were others that hit this way more. USA must have seen the uptick in 6x “grocery” purchases after announcing this new 6x category. Then they went through each account and shut down the rewards portal for each violator. I am unsure if they can see what is actually purchased.

Wasn’t it Gordon Gecko that said “Pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered?” You got greedy my friend. 2.5k per week! I think I understand why they shut you down.

People who did 2-3k/week got shut down as well. USAlliance was sensitive even to suckling pigs. All of them juicing the rewards in aggregate got them to notice and shut down everyone in bulk.

$2000/month still quite good. I imagine that’s enough to satisfy most families’ legit grocery spending on a single card while weeding out a lot of rewards gaming / MS-like activity.

I would consider going for this card except that they keep changing the rewards structure. I’m afraid I would get it and then they change to something useless for me within a year. In that case I should just get a card with a fat SUB instead.
