Verizon is making changes to the earn rates on the Verizon credit card. The changes are as follows:
- Dining purchases increased to 4% from 3%
- Phone and accessory purchases paid for in full from Verizon increased to 4% from 2%
- Monthly Verizon bill decreased to 1% from 2%
Don’t think this card was worth having before and that hasn’t changed with these changes. Expected changes go into effect on August & October.
I keep this card just to pay my monthly bill. It’s either that or give Verizon direct access to my bank account in order to keep the discount.
It’s disappointing they cut the earn rate but it’s a captive audience – either pay $10 more per line and get a higher CB rate or get whatever Verizon chooses to give you in exchange for that autopay discount
They used to have Verizon up which gave us free stuff every month, now I see an update on the app they’re not even embarrassed and they just call it myaccess to get sports tickets etc.
Yeah, before Verizon Up was gutted, we all basically got an additional $5/month off our bills.
Was actually planning to get this once the 200 dollar SUB was back but 1% back on verizon bill is just laughable for the branded card. My fios is the only bill I can’t get cash back from one way or another with their autopay games. It was a tough pill to swallow with the 2% before but 1% is just rough.
If you’re a Verizon subscriber, isn’t 1% better than 0% when drawn from a checking account?
Maybe we could manually pay a Verizon bill with Chase Ink, but for ease of use, this card qualifies for the auto-pay discount.
Granted, if you’re trying to stay low on card counts, this card wouldn’t be one of the first cards to pick up.
I use the card solely for my Verizon bill (which saves me $40/ month and 1%) and 4% back on gas. How is it not worth it?
I wouldn’t *become* a Verizon customer to get this card, but if you are already a Verizon postpaid customer, this is still one of the only cards with an uncapped grocery category, and 4% is as good as it gets for that.
The only thing that competes if you are a high spender and don’t want to manage caps is the US Bank Altitude Reserve, and that requires that you are always using mobile pay, redeeming the points for travel, and managing an AF card.
Add to that that this is one of only a few no-AF cards that have all of Grocery, Dining, and Gas as categories (for people who value having to juggle fewer cards), and this card definitely has its niche.
The primary reason to get this card is so Verizon DOES NOT touch my bank account and still maintain the $10/line autopay discount (cue multiple T-Mobile and AT&T data branches).
Any cash back is just extra gravy.
This is a great card for international use ironically. No foreign transaction fees, no AF, 4% on both groceries and restaurants.
I don’t know why the hate on the card unless you not a Verizon wireless customer. I just buy 4 gift cards from my local grocery story to cover my bill and that includes their premium plan and phone payment. In effect I’m just paying $28 per month.
Verizon GC or Visa/Mastercard GC?
I don’t think grocery stores sells regular verizon GCs, I’ve only seen the prepaid ones. I am able to buy verizon GCs directly from verizon’s site and have it shipped. US Bank Cash + gives 5% back on those purchases, which can then be used to pay your bill and have autopay enabled (I leave like $10 left for autopay)
I’m assuming Visa/MC GC.
$500 x 4 x 4% = $80
which is how much I think a typical Verizon bill is.
Then the $7 GC fee times 4 brings us to the $28 Mr. CT mentioned.
It also gives you two free Travel Pass days each year which is worth $20. I use it only for the Verizon bill.
Another worthless credit card not worth having.
I wouldn’t say it’s worthless, unless there are other ways to get the $10 auto pay discount with another credit card. I have it just to get the $10 credit/line and I have 6 soon to be 7 lines on my account, so that’s $70 off my bill. Agree that it’s worthless for other spend, but it sucks that the earning on monthly spend is coming down to 1%
The only other way to get the discount is with your bank account which probably earns the same if not zero rebate
Steven,
You can use a bank account instead of their credit card to get the same discount. I’ve been doing this for quite some time.

I think they use the card to get discount and get 2% back, which is going to be 1%. Can’t get that with a bank account.
Regardless, you can get the $10/line discount without the card, so can’t really count that as $70 savings every month. The savings is the extra 2% on a $300 phone bill since that’s the difference between paying with bank account and paying with this. So roughly $5-8/month better than paying with bank account, depending on how high your phone bill is.
The primary reason to get this card is so Verizon DOES NOT touch my bank account and still maintain the $10/line autopay discount (cue multiple T-Mobile and AT&T data branches).
Any cash back is just extra gravy.
That’s what I use my throwaway account debit card for 😃
I still intercept my T-Mobile bill and pay with a 5% credit card.
@Mango use a Discover debit card. They give you 1% back (up to 3k in purchase a month) and I get the $10/line autopay discount and they don’t touch my bank account. Win Win.
I don’t need to get my cell phone access to my bank account.
Hey Steven, to my knowledge Juno still offers 5% cash back (debit card).
This card also provides 2 Travelpass days annually for international roaming, worth $20.
For people that want cash back, this card is quite good. No AF and 4% on gas, groceries, and dining. If you know a card that gives you 4% on all those with no AF, I’m listening.
Redstone FCU is the closest. 5% dining and gas, 3% groceries and others, 1.5% all other spend
unlimited ?
No, full terms here https://www.redfcu.org/content/dam/rfcu/pdfs/mychoice_rewards_tc.pdf
Does it give cash back or does it give Verizon cash back?
Scratch that question. Locks you into Verizon.
It’s Verizon dollars, but since you have a monthly bill from Verizon, it’s the same as cash.
Not if the supposed advantage here is “uncapped grocery” … unless you’re going to buy a lot of iphones to use up the verizon dollars.
Well I have a single line on Verizon. I pay $80/month. At 4% grocery cash back, I would need to spend more than $2,000 in a month on grocery to earn more than $80 of cash back. That’s pretty much uncapped. Probably not many spending more than $2,000/month on grocery.
Citi Premier + Custom Cash + Rewards+ does that at 3x-5x points depending on how you value them. Of course there’s a $95 AF, but SUB can offset this for a number of years.
This is good like mentioned if you have verizon. 4% on gas, grocery, and dining without having to swap with spend and quarterly changes. Otherwise you have to carry multiple cards and monitor spend as citi custom cash is 500/month and etc.
