Visa Category Code Lookup No Longer Available; Other Options Available (MCC)

The Visa Merchant Category Code (MCC) lookup webpage was taken down sometime in the past few weeks. We’ve been using that page for years to find out how each merchant codes for the sake of credit card category bonuses. Unknown if it’s down for good or a temporary thing.

Other Options

  • Award Wallet has a page with info on specific merchants and which cards earn a bonus on each one.
  • We once linked a few PDFs from Visa and Mastercard detailing how they code some merchants.
  • Our Payments Workshop tries to track data points on this and other card-related topics. (I haven’t updated it in a while, but there’s still a lot of good info here. I have to update it, just haven’t done it much due to technical problems with the page. Hopefully I’ll update it one of these days.)

I have noticed they’re similar to SIC codes, but not always identical, if that’s any help.

MaxRewards app has this credit card code lookup feature. You add your credit cards to the app. Can show you local merchants and which of your credit cards to maximize your points earn. You can customize this feature as well. Add additional categories or merchants for those quarterly bonus spending categories. Caveat emptor! Chase occasionally blocks synchronization with the app.

It’s official: Visa is officially cracking down on MS Amex-style. Don’t everyone be outraged at once.

But visa is a payment network not a bank. They make money on transactions and there’s no risk them. If anything they should like the increase transaction volume of MS? No?
