The Offer
- Residents of Washington state: in honor of Express Credit Union’s 90th Anniversary, they are offering a special Certificate of Deposit rate. From February 9 through December 9, on the 9th of each month when you open a new CD you’ll get 9% APY on balances up to $5,000.
Our Verdict
This is a good rate since you’ll earn $450 on the $5,000 which is a solid couple hundred dollars more than you’d otherwise earn. There is still the hassle of setting up a new membership with the credit union and dealing with a possible hard pull, etc. Let us know how it goes if you try.

9/9 Applied
9/18 Funded $5005
9/19 Called to open CD $5000
Were you able to use CC funding? I didn’t see that option in my funding form.
Chuck this is dead:
“Effective 9/11/2024 Express CU is no longer offering the Anniversary Promotional CD. We will honor applicants who applied prior to this date.”
Where do you see that? I don’t see that on the linked page
I received the email from Express CU about this early termination of the promotional CD offer.
Seconding CC’s that the Promo CD is dead, via Email.
Can anyone post the funding link and highlights of the welcome letter with personal info x’d out?
Approval took 10 days as they are swamped. Used online app, uploaded requested docs and completed DocuSign. Finally able to create online account access but haven’t received a welcome email or funding link. Nothing in spam for P1 (Outlook) or P2 (Gmail) either. Thanks in advance
I also have not received a funding link. Applied Sept 6. I suspect CC funding is dead since the CD promotion is also dead.
I applied last week and got approved. The funding link sent over actually only gives options of debit card or credit card. Wondering if anyone tried to fund by credit cards? Will it be considered as cash advance?
This week, three members of my household funded this CD with Chase credit cards. The credit card charges all posted today as “merchandise and services,” not cash advances.
Was there a limit to how much can be funded?
The funding link I received doesn’t appear to have credit card as an option anymore.
I email’d them and I got back this response in regards to chex and hard pull.
We do not pull credit for membership qualifications. But we do run the ChexSystems report.
Out of staters need not apply
Bummer can only open 1 9% CD and can’t open one every month
Had the same question? Did you confirm it with the customer service?
No just reading the T&C
I took this deal a couple of months ago. Would have been easy but their systems were being updated so it was a bit slower and more hassle than necessary. Fortunately great customer service smoothed things over. If the required member savings is opened and funded a few days before the ninth they can open the special CD with just an email. They do pull Chex but don’t seem inquiry-sensitive.
Any CC funding on checking or savings account?
no
DrWendy: False. Their payment portal accepts credit cards.
Unfortunately CC funding appears to be dead as of early September.
Do they pull ChexSystems? The agreement at https://www.expresscu.org/forms/membership-and-account-agreement.pdf mentions they are authorized to get “a credit report or credit score from any consumer reporting agencies, to verify your eligibility for the accounts and services you request.”
Same question. Is it a hard pull?
I’m convinced that Chexsystems is the work of the devil. Nothing but problems from them for no reason at all. Can’t open any bank accounts.
