The Offer
- BECU is offering a $200 checking bonus when you open a new checking account with the promo code PASSPORTMBR and perform 5 qualifying actions within the first 30 days of joining:
- Make a purchase using your BECU Debit Mastercard®.
- Write a check or electronic check.
- Make a payment using BECU Bill Pay.
- Or deposit $500 or more into your checking account.
The Fine Print
- 1Redeemable at any BECU location and online. The promo code 23Q1CONV must be entered at time of application. BECU is not required to pay the promotional incentive for accounts opened without the appropriate promo code. New member may not be an existing member, must be 18 years or older, within BECU’s field of membership, and be eligible to open and maintain membership. Not all applicants will qualify. New members who are rejoining but have had a membership relationship with BECU in the last six (6) months do not qualify. Business, Fiduciary, Zero-Dividend, HSA, and Early Savers accounts are not eligible to receive deposit bonuses. BECU employees are also not eligible to receive deposit bonuses. New member will receive the $200 bonus deposit to the open Member Advantage savings account within 120 days of opening qualifying accounts and meeting the utilization requirements within 30 days. Accounts must remain open and in good standing for at least 90 days. Bonus deposits will not be made to closed accounts. $200 bonus deposit will be reported for the new member as interest income to the IRS on Form 1099-INT at year-end. Other terms, limitations, and conditions may apply. Check with BECU for current Annual Percentage Yield (APY) of accounts. BECU reserves the right to terminate this offer at any time.
- All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them
Avoiding Fees
Monthly Fees
Their member advantage and regular checking accounts both come with no monthly fee, you’re probably better off with the member advantage checking account as this earns 4.07% APY on balances up to $500
Early Account Termination Fee
As far as I could see there was no early account termination fee in their fee schedule.
Our Verdict
Better than the previous $100 referral bonus as this way the person signing up gets the full $200 bonus. Deal might also be nationwide. This bonus is definitely worth chasing, just keep in mind they are very ChexSystems sensitive so people might not get approved unfortunately.

Promo code PASSNEW24
I opened my account in branch and mentioned that code.
DP:
12/12 Opened checking and savings in branch
12/12 ATM Deposits to checking: $2500, $2500, $2400, $100 (I was moving cash from another bank, offer req. is only $500+)
12/18 $150 Dividend Adjustment-Deposit – Welcome to BECU! New Member Bonus (deposited into savings account)
Opened in May 2024 and still no bonus posted. I’ve contacted them 3 times already and they keep telling me that there’s a support ticket but they have no updates. I would not recommend this credit union.
Got denied 3/24
7/5: Checking and Savings account opened with promo PASSPORTMBR
7/12: $501 real DD to Checking
7/12: $501 real DD to Savings
7/16: $200 “Welcome to BECU! New Member Bonus” deposited to savings
I don’t think the deposit to savings account is necessary, but they’re offering 6.17% on the first $500 so why not. Surprised how fast the bonus was received compared to the experience of others. Maybe they finally got their act together.
Congrats Jamie. Thanks for your DP. What’s your Chex count? Jamie How many bank accounts did you open in the last 12 months or 24 month before opening BECU? Thank you
If applying OOS, and you get rejected online, you can try applying with a banker through their video banking service. It can be found under the “Support” link at the top of the page. You do have to turn on your camera since you’ll have to hold up your ID to the camera. It’s essentially an in-branch application without having to physically go to a branch.
Mention the offer to the rep helping you, and they should be able to look it up on their end and apply the code to the app. They’ll ask you which foundation you’d like to donate to during the process.
Ultimately, I got denied due to Chex. Rep was super surprised and even went through my Chex report to see if there was anything derogatory. Didn’t seem phased by the number of inquiries when I told them that I was rate shopping for a new auto loan. Rep couldn’t override the denial, unfortunately.
For those that are lol/24, video banking probably wouldn’t make a difference. But, if your Chex count is low and you’re OOS, this might work.
What does lol/24 mean?
Dirk
“lol” – “a lot of new accounts”
“24” – “last 24 months”
“lol/24” – “a lot of new accounts in last 24 months”
looks like this is not worth pursuing based on the issues people have had
Hello. Here is another link for AAA members. Applied successfully and playing the waiting game now. Also of note they have some whacky external transfer requirements so read up on those if you join. They also have a weird “high” rate thing going on 6% on $500 in savings and 4% on $400 in checking, whatever I will take it. BECU seems to have a lot of discounts for fun stuff in WA so was looking to join, hope it pays! https://www.becu.org/Partners/AAA William Charles
did the account payout?
Finally received my bonus, took several calls and opening a support ticket for them to finally push it through. I did both the deposit and the debit card purchases to be safe.
In the end they only gave me $150 instead of $200, not sure if it’s worth pursuing further since this has already been such a pain to get.
11/10/2023 – Account opened
11/28/2023 – Transfer $501 from Ally
11/30/2023 – 5x $1 Amazon reloads on debit card
04/03/2024 – $150 bonus received
Thanks for the data points. I had call them today to fix something they did wrong opening my accounts. They were horrible to deal with. I should have listened to what is posted here. I won’t waste my time with them when bonus is not paid. Straight to a compliant for me. I already met the requirements so just waiting out the clock!
The BECU Passport promotion seems to be for people with a Passport membership but I don’t think they ask for your Passport card number.
This is the link to the offer on the Passport portal: https://passportcorporate.com/Offers/tHS10NcDpvs%3d
Several companies and associations offer access to Passport for free: https://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Apassportcorporate.com. Passport memberships through credit unions won’t show the offer.
You get the passport membership through BECU, just sign up for the checking account and they will email you your membership number.
Denied in June for Chex, applied again in November, finally opened in branch. It’s possible! Hopefully they correctly applied the promo code I gave them, although it doesn’t sound like the bonus is posting for anyone anyways.
Not worth it for $200 given the number of hoops you to jump through to get the bonus (I still haven’t received mine). I generally skip bonuses less than $250 but this seemed pretty straight forward.
