Wells Fargo has announced to deposit account holders that the ATM access code feature will be discontinued on 4/1/21. Wells Fargo first introduced the access code back in 2017. I suspect the removal of this feature is to encourage account holders to carry the physical card with them, but it’s always disappointing to see these options taken away.

This is horrible!! Bring it back!
I like using it it was an easy way for my friends to pay me back
Here is where this affects me. I often send money to my brother who is a minor, all he had to do was go to the ATM and use my code.
There are people who don’t have NFC, the scanner in your phone.
I tried to use my iPad because my phone died. That’s when I discovered, although it has NFC, it doesn’t support apple pay in stores. Where I was really assed out is when I decided to download the app and… viola, the access code feature was canned! It’s pretty hard to support their decision over one incident. We can’t help that some people don’t have common sense 🤷🏾♂️
Someone else briefly mentioned it but I’ll explicitly say that they removed this feature in favor of a more secure still mobile-based solution (Apple Wallet). I really liked the access code solution and didn’t realize that you could add your debit card to your mobile wallet and use that at an atm. Now that I know you can, I actually think it’s more convenient than the access code.
Haha, if that’s their plan then fuck ’em. The only reason I kept my account with this joke of a bank is precisely because of the ATM feature, because why would I want to carry a card directly tied to my bank account instead of a credit/charge card and all the protection that offers? What a group of morons with the classic inward-looking fallacy, how do we protect our own legacy interests instead of offering a better product for customers? WF is just missing the middle “T” in their initials.
Not everything is about you.
This change was likely an anti-fraud measure for a feature that had a lot of security risks to begin with.
Yea ok their supposed new chips is their new debit cards that are supposed to be more secure are still easily hacked or stolen. Now that I really need the money from my account for work the next few days until my new card gets here, I can’t get access to it. Yea I suppose I could take a day off from work to go into the bank to get money, but with the ATM code I didn’t have to. Now I have to lose more money not working to get access to my bank via an easily hacked piece of plastic.
Don’t really need it. I just use Apple Pay on my phone to use the ATM when I need to, which is once every 6 months lol.
The access code feature has been both redundant and obsolete for smartphone users for several years now.
It was initially marketed as a backup option for ATM access in case you left your wallet at home, but anyone with an NFC-enabled smartphone and a mobile wallet is less likely to use it nowadays.
While it’s not entirely useless, I’m honestly surprised WF didn’t nix this feature sooner.
I only ask out of ignorance as I haven’t used an ATM in quite some time, but for WF can you gain access to your account via Apple/Google Pay if your debit card is linked?
Yes. It’s described here under the 2nd question: https://www.wellsfargo.com/help/security-and-fraud/access-code-faqs
Wells Fargo has NFC readers on their ATMs, so you just tap your phone selecting your debit card and it prompts you for your PIN like normal. It’s faster and more convenient than the access code option in the app.
This could be the reason:

omg those poor gullible grandparents
this story is almost as sad as finding out that people still use cash
card not present fraud is a pretty compelling reason to discontinue this feature. I expect PNC to follow suit.
Wow pretty arrogant POV about cash, lots of people in the US have to use cash -some can’t get a bank account or credit.
Many immigrants don’t trust banks. Some communities have been “red-lined” by banks, some have a KYC barrier to have a bank account.
Granted more virtual bank and money services have popped up in recent years.
I keep a couple months cash on hand for emergencies.
I don’t disagree with you since all those things sound pretty sad
Cash is useful at bars, but otherwise that’s about it.
WF being WF.
While I rarely use ATMs, my debit card stays in my sock drawer.
But it was one of the few reason I kept a WF bank account – was for pulling out cash from time to time – less so during COVID. May just close the account rather than have to keep money parked to keep account fee free (and its not a part of my MS game any more).
I don’t use ATMs enough to dedicate a Samsung pay wallet slot.
Did not know Samsung has a card limit. Not aware of one for Apple Pay. I have 7 cards stored.
You get 10 “slots” you can get 10 more with Samsung watch.
I use the slots for meeting MSRs and as A “Virtual AU” to avoid a 5/24 slot for Two-Player mode. Before COVID I was swapping cards out on a regular basis (MSR) .
But You can have 50+ membership cards in with a scannable bar codes in Samsung pay.
I keep, odd GC, Auto insurance, DL, passport and other membership cards ( you can use the camera to take a picture of front and back of passport, eGC you can’t store otherwise – and it has a notes section for PIN of GC.
It helps me keep up with and use GC from Hotels.com, Delta eGC, etc.
Samsung pay does allow you to store some GC and some membership/loyalty cards of partners but not all.
I feel like your debit card is more deserving of a slot on Samsung pay than a delta gift card…
It’s only CC/Debit cards that fills a slot.
AFAIK no limit to membership/loyalty card slots – of which you manually add one not listed.
Used to use Swych app to store GC (RIP) now I have gone back to Samsung pay – but S-Pay doesn’t support as many natively as Swych did – so I have to manually add to store.
The Delta gift card wouldn’t be taking up one of the 10 credit/debit slots.
Just download Google Pay and stick your debit card in that. It’s annoying to need a second wallet but if you only use it every six months then not a huge burden.
A quick google search says Apple Pay has a limit of 12 cards for recent devices, 8 cards for older devices.
