For some reason this post disappeared, so we are reposting.
Visa has several tiers of cards, the three main tiers are:
- Basic
- Visa Signature
- Visa Infinite
Both Visa Signature & Visa Infinite cards have a minimum credit limit. Let’s look at what it is for each.
Visa Signature Minimum Credit Limit
It’s useful to know what the minimum credit limit is for Visa signature cards, because with Bank of America if you’re not eligible for that limit then you’ll automatically be reconsidered and approved for one of their lower cards such as Platinum Plus or Secured. These cards come with a much lower sign up bonus typically.
Officially the minimum credit limit for these cards is $5,000 – although it can be sometimes possible to be approved for a lower limit (except for cards issued by Bank of America).
Visa Infinite Minimum Credit Limit
It’s useful to know the minimum credit limit for Visa Infinite cards, because some cards are only issued as a Visa Infinite product (e.g Chase Sapphire Reserve & Chase Ritz-Carlton) and if a card issuer (e.g Chase) doesn’t want to extend you that minimum line of credit you’ll be denied for the card. Officially the minimum credit limit is $10,000 for Visa Infinite products, but some people have much lower limits as they were automatically upgraded to the Ritz Carlton Visa Infinite card.
I just got approved for the US Bank Altitude Reserve, which is a Visa Infinite, with a CL of $5k… Boo
I read on other sites that you can charge over your credit line (up to 2x) on Visa Signature cards, so long as you get the balance down to your CL before the statement closes. Is this true at Bank of America? It would have saved me a LOT of problems I had moving CL around last year in order to charge my income taxes!
What are the Best MINIMUM CREDIT LIMIT ( signature cards ) ? Any recommendations ?
I have a Chase Hyatt card with credit limit 12k. Is it possible to upgrade to Visa infinite?
My Amazon Chase Visa Signature was originally approved for $1500, and 2 months later they upped it too $2500.
Just approved with a $4K limit on a Visa Signature for Citi Hhonors. Odd because Citi has always approved me for around $20K in the past. There hasn’t been any change in my churning pattern either.
Got an Ink plus with a $5k CL. I was way over 5/24 and had to call reconsideration to get approved.
FYI, the reasons I gave on the phone for applying for so many cards were “to get rewards” for each card that the Chase credit analyst asked about. Still resulted in an approval 😉
Data Point:
My Chase Hyatt (Visa Signatures) card is currently at $1,500. It was above $5K though when I was first approved for it.
My CapitalOne Spark card now is at $3K and also a Visa Signatures. It was a regular Visa Platinum when I was first approved for it with $1K starting credit limit.
But can the CL on an existing Signature or Infinite be lowered below 5K/10K ?
I churn a lot and don’t like existing cards hogging up my CL potential.
It’s definitely possible on Signature cards, not sure about the new visa infinite cards.
Thanks for reposting. I saw the article the other day and planned on coming back to it….when I did, it was gone. Thought I was losing my mind there for a second…
