[YMMV] Chase Cards: Get 5x Points On Select Bill Payments – Insurance, Utilities, Phone, Cable, Internet (7/1-9/30)

Deal has ended, view more Chase deals by clicking here.

The Offer

Chase Freedom Unlimited | Freedom | United | Sapphire Catch All page

  • Activate by September 30, 2020, and you can earn a total of 5%/5x on up to $2,000 in purchases when you pay select bills with your Chase credit card between April 1 and September 30, 2020.

Eligible categories: utilities, insurance, phone service, cable, internet.

The Fine Print

  • To be eligible for this offer, you must log on to the website referenced in this offer and enroll by 09/30/20, 11:59 p.m. E.T.
  • You’ll earn 5%/5x total Cash Back rewards for each $1 spent, on up to $2,000 in total spend on combined purchases in the reward categories listed below during the promotional period.
  • For a purchase to qualify for this offer, the merchant must submit charges to your credit card by the last day of the promotional period 09/30/20.
  • Please allow up to 8 weeks after qualifying purchases post to your account for Cash Back to post to your account. To be eligible for this offer, your account must be open and not in default at the time of fulfillment.
  • Rewards Categories: Internet, Cable, and Phone Services category merchants provide internet, cable, satellite television, radio, cellular, wireless data, and landline services. In addition, if you purchase or pay for your internet, cable and satellite television, phone or related services in a merchant’s store that is not registered by the merchant in the applicable services category, the purchase or payment will not qualify; for example, phone bill payments in a merchant’s store that register to Chase as a telephone equipment store.
  • Utility category merchants provide electric, household fuel, water, and sanitation. Please note that purchases of equipment and some merchants that sell utility-related goods and services are not included; for example, electronics or other retail stores and merchants offering maintenance and cleaning services.
  • Insurance category merchants provide health, automobile, homeowners, medical, and life insurance.
  • What determines whether a merchant falls into a category? Merchants who accept Visa/Mastercard credit cards are assigned a merchant code, which is determined by the merchant or its processor in accordance with Visa/Mastercard procedures based on the kinds of products and services they primarily sell. We group similar merchant codes into categories for purposes of making offers to you.
  • Please note: We make every effort to include all relevant merchant codes in our categories. However, even though a merchant or some of the items that it sells may appear to fit within a category, the merchant may not have a merchant code in that category. When this occurs, purchases with that merchant won’t qualify for offers on purchases in that category. Purchases submitted by you, an authorized user, or the merchant through third-party payment accounts, mobile or wireless card readers, online or mobile digital wallets, or similar technology will not qualify in a category if the technology is not set up to process the purchase in that category. This promotional offer is non-transferable. For more information about your rewards program, see your Rewards Program Agreement. For more information about Chase rewards categories, see chase.com/RewardsCategoryFAQ.

Our Verdict

Reader FR sent this one in, I found the link for Freedom Unlimited, haven’t yet been able to find the direct links for the other offers, but you can try the Catch All link and it should find your offer if you are eligible. There is also another offer that requires two bill payments for 1,500 bonus points.

We’ve seen this kind of bonus offer from Chase numerous times before, it’s usually sent out across a wide variety of cards including Sapphire, Freedom, IHG, Amazon, etc. We’ll add the other links as we discover them. These offers are typically targeted/YMMV, try the link and see if it works for you or wait for an email.

Insurance and utilities are usually the sweet spot for most people since it’s a non-bonused category, whereas things like phone and internet a lot of people already get a bonus on them.

There’s a similar-but-different offer others are seeing for 1,500 points with 2 bill payments.

Got this offer on my CSP, would this be a 10k point max? – You’ll earn 5 points total for each $1 spent, on up to $2,000 in total spend on combined purchases in the reward categories listed below during the promotional period (4 additional point(s) on top of the 1 point(s) earned on each purchase), until you reach the $2,000 spend limit. ——my insurance comes due Oct 1. Gonna have to pay that early.

This is weird. Catch all page says “How can you earn your 5% bonus cash back rewards?
Earn a total of 5% bonus cash back rewards on up to $2,000 in purchases made with your Freedom Unlimited card in select categories: Utilities, Insurance, Phone Service, Cable, Internet from July 1 – September 30, 2020.*”

But then after the asterisk it says “* 1,500 Points Offer: To be eligible for this offer, you must activate by 09/30/20, 11:59 p.m. E.T. You’ll earn 1,500 bonus points, which can be redeemed for $15 cash back, when you make 2 bill pay transactions in the reward categories listed below during the promotional period. …”

So which offer is it? (Or both or neither?)

BTW Chase secure message is not accepting messages, or maybe limited by topic.

That’s exactly my point. When I did that, instead of getting text that clearly describes one or the other, the wording is a mixture of the two. Someone at Chase has probably messed up somewhere with their website. I can’t tell which offer is in effect (and with the messed up page, I can’t be sure if it’ll work at all).

Yea, my offer was also contradictory in a different way. My email said I had to make FOUR payments of utilities (etc.), but in the fine print at the bottom of the email, and when I clicked on the link, was 2 payments…

Mine is that way too on the CFU. I’m assuming the *terms is the correct offer. On my Sapphire, the same heading but the terms state the 5%.

I used the catch all link for both.

My CFU is that way too. Any DP regarding to either one works?

Same here. I made an $8 payment to my cell phone bill and I got 40 points. I’ll make another one today to see if I get 1500 points. If that is true, it’s possible that both offers apply to our cards.

Chuck since there’s a catch all page, these are probably not really important.

Here’s the sapphire and marriott links
https://www.chase.com/mybonus/sapphire31
https://www.chase.com/mybonus/marriott31

(found them via a few trial and error)

ihg21 and hyatt31 would flash a form and redirect to an error page.
hyatt21 is an expired offer.

Does anyone know if this works with a rent portal? We use appfolio to pay rent.

If I already get 5x via the Ink card I’m guessing this is pretty much the same thing

Ink doesn’t give 5x on “electric, household fuel, water, and sanitation” utilities like this promo does, does it?

also insurance, which for me is the best one as my home insurance is due next month. Plus a car policy that comes in September.
