The Offer
Targeted offer sent out via e-mail, subject line is ‘Get $10 cash back when you pay touch-free with PayPal’
- PayPal is offering some users $10 cash back when you make a touch free payment of $10 or more
Our Verdict
Nice deal if you’re targeted, share the subject line if you know it in the comments below.
Just used PayPal at my local CVS and already earned my $10. They had signs promoting PayPal as a payment method but the cashier didn’t know how to do it. But we figured it out together and it really wasn’t that complicated. The cashier needs to hit other Digital payment on their screen, then scan your QR code, then you need to move your phone towards the pinpad and your cellphone screen will change from the QR code to ask whether you want to pay CVS. You hit accept and then a receipt prints.
This was a pretty easy free $10. Not sure, I would use it regularly though as it involves way more steps then Apple Pay.
So I noticed scanning a QR code of a business PP account results in “payment of goods and services”, which could have tax implications. However fees are waived until the end of the year due to Corona.
When you scan a QR code of a personal PP account, what does it “code” as? Not sure if I want max out my freedoms sending to the business account if it results in a 1099.
You won’t get 1099 from PayPal unless you receive more than $20k and have more than 200 transactions.
I read that before too but is that fact or a “may” receive? AFAIK that is the IRS threshold set in stone. For example what if I ran $100K and only had 100 transactions?
$100k is too extreme. I would not do more than 10k or even 5k to be safe. Just a good way to use VGC/MGC occasionally.
Justin, K-Man, would you mind sharing details as to how you were able to get the $10 credit? Didn’t you have to scan the QR code at a store? For the life of me, I am unable to figure out how to get this done (targeted for the offer) and cannot find stores that can scan the code!
Thanks much!
(Reference: “Sent $10 to myself and got the instant credit with no fee for using CC” and “Sent from her account using $10, instant credit”).
You scan the QR code of someone else’s PayPal account. I don’t think it was the intended use for this promotion but it gets the job done.
Thanks for responding! So, within my PayPal app on a smart phone, I have the ability to scan the QR code on an other phone?
Should be a button on the bottom left that says Scan/Pay.
Just tried this trick with my credit card, didn’t get the $10 credit though, not sure if it’s because the recipient is an overseas account.
Update: it did work. The credit went back to my credit card directly.
Kristy that is odd. It should been waiting in you Paypal for you to accept the money. You can either transfer it to your bank account if linked or keep in Paypal (if you have a Paypal cash account)
If P2 got the $10 bonus and I initiate a “Request Payment” and P2 then pays me, will this count as a “purchase” and trigger the $10 credit being used? And will there be any fees? Thanks!
No. You must scan a QR code. No QR code = no promotion.
I read your comment wrong. It’s not a credit, it’s cash back added directly to your PayPal balance so you can do whatever you want with it.
Thanks, and I think I worded my question poorly. First, this is in regards to the CVS credit. What I meant is this: P2 got the $10 credit yesterday for spending $20 at CVS. The only way to “liquidate” that credit is through a purchase (since it’s not actually available to just transfer out). Would sending the $10 to P1 (me) work, and not incur fees? Or does P2 simply have top use it with a legit purchase, like at a CVS again?
Edit: I realize I also should have posted this in the other thread specific to CVS. But any help is appreciated!
You’re in the wrong thread for the CVS promotion. This promotion is $10 cash back, while the CVS is $10 reward (credit). Two totally different promotions, as this one came out before CVS and is a targeted promotion.

You need a legit purchase to use your $10 reward (credit) from the CVS promotion.
Dang, i just posted my edit, too. Yes, P2 did indeed already score the $10 credit after $20 spend at CVS. Now just wondering if sending that money to me would count as a payment and thus enable her to use the $10 credit without having to maker a real purchase.
No.
Thanks. That’s what I suspected. And sorry for the confusion!
Did NOT work at Walmart. Scanned the QR code on self checkout screen via PP app and got a message pop up in app that said something along the lines of trouble scanning QR code. Don’t remember the exact message since I have the memory of a goldfish.
Same, could not figure out how to get it working at walmart. I even asked for assistance (low likelihood of that helping though but I figured I made the trip there already ☹️). Ended up just sending to P2 and got immediately credited.
Self checkout guy was coughing like crazy. I held my breath and GTFO ASAP.
Are people keeping this hush hush as a unicorn? 🤫
I have 2 PayPal accounts. Sent $10 to myself and got the instant credit with no fee for using CC. Wonded if I should do this to max this quarter’s Chase freedom.
Wife targeted
with this – Just for you. Pay touch-free and get $10 cash back
Did not get on mine. Sent from her account using $10, instant credit.
I didn’t receive the email, but it appeared on a page after I logged in later tonight. This is the third PP promo that I’ve seen in the past few wks that contain conflicting info on PP’s part. The first page of this promo says it expires 11/08, but the click-through page says it expires 11/15. A few days ago, the ‘no QR fee’ promo said that there were no fees through 2021, but the click-through page had a 2020 end date. They later fixed it.
Subject Line – Get $10 cash back when you pay touch-free with PayPal
Seeing how DPs show that we can use a CC without a fee, this seems like a pretty easy MS opportunity (especially if you have P1 and P2)
I guess Paypal could shut down your account if your activity looks strange but not sure how much would trigger a warning/review/shutdown
right especially with the chase freedom category right now 0.0
