[YMMV] Purchase Uber Credit & Get Up To 60% Off

The Offer

Check your app/e-mail to see if you’re eligible. No direct link

  • Uber is offering up to 60% off rides in June when you purchase Uber credit. The deal is as follows:
    • Purchase $25 in Uber credit and get 20% off rides in June
    • Purchase $50 in Uber credit and get 40% off rides in June
    • Purchase $100 in Uber credit and get 60% off rides in June

The Fine Print

  • Credit doesn’t expire and does work on UberEats purchases

Our Verdict

Normally you can purchase Uber gift cards at a discount, so keep that in mind with this deal (normally around 20% off). Seems like this might be an alternative to Uber Plus passes they are trialing. I don’t think those discounts are long term substantial but might as well take advantage while you can.

It says the credit does not expire in the the DoC article. But it also says the rides need to be for June? Does that mean to get the discounted or bonus % you need to ride or Uber Eats in June? If not the “credit” you bought will only equal the exact dollar amount you paid?

How do you buy Uber credit? Is that just buying Uber Gift Cards and applying the GC value to the account?

Is Uber still accused of pricing your fares for trips differently if you have credit with them? I recall this accusation being cited in a (I believe) New York Times article.

It’s this true for ubereats too? Ubereats already has so much gross margin built in

I haven’t seen them base pricing based on credit, but they do overcharge you for many reasons. TPG’s summary was pretty good. Basically the only way to get around it is anything you think the price is more than it ought to be, set your destination as a random point halfway there (say a gas station), then update your destination when you get in (and let your rider know what you’re doing). Sucks to do, but this is what Uber is now.

I don’t think the same applies to Ubereats, but in any case there is nothing you can do about it with that if they are.
