[YMMV] Upgrade To American Express Blue Cash Preferred, Get $150 Bonus + Waived Annual Fee

Update 3/25/23: Some are seeing the better offer in-app (I’m not sure where to check to find it, perhaps in the Amex Offer section). Also interesting: some people are seeing upgrade offers for other cards at the same link, such as the Amex Everyday > Everyday Preferred. Open the below link, login and click on each card to see the available upgrade offers. (ht San_K) Some people are also reporting higher upgrade offers of $300.

The Offer

Direct Link to offer (YMMV, login to see if it works for you)

  • American Express Blue Cash Everyday cardholders can upgrade to the Blue Cash Preferred and get their $95 annual fee waived for the first year.
  • They’ll also get a $150 statement credit after spending $1,000 within the first 6 months.

Others are seeing just $75 statement credit. And some are not getting the annual fee waiver.

Our Verdict

The offer link works for me only partially – it’s showing the $75 bonus, but not the $95 fee waiver. Personally, I’d go for an offer for $150 or $75 with a waived annual fee.

I upgraded P2’s BCP with the $75 offer earlier this month. They had the offer on two cards, and just got a mailed offer for a $150 upgrade. Doesn’t say which card it’s for, and I didn’t go far enough into the process using the provided code to see if it would work. Any chance CS would match the $150 on the upgrade we already did?

While logged into Amex yesterday, I got a pop-up offer to apply for the Blue Cash Preferred card w/0% APR period & $300 spend bonus.

I got no notification that I wouldn’t be eligible for the promotional terms, but I strongly suspect I am not.

Reason 1: recently accepted another pop-up offer (while logged in under a different user ID) to upgrade my BCE to BCP w/$150 spend bonus & accepted it. So I already have the BCP *and* will presumably receive the bonus soonish.

Reason 2: recently looked into the Cash Magnet card for the promo 0% rate & *did* get the “You are not eligible for the promo” notification. Cancelled the application. I had never applied for nor held a Cash Magnet card before, so I believe I was disqualified by the BCP-upgrade promo. This was also my first taste of Pop-Up Jail 😎
So today I got an approval email with an “Accept Your Card” button for a 2nd BCP. Two calls to Amex & I cannot discover whether or not I’d get the promo terms. I just have to roll the dice.

What are my odds? Has anyone been in my situation before?
TIA!

PS Tried posting this question in r/churning daily question thread for 09/30 & it was auto-deleted followed by a suggestion to post it in the daily question thread. smh..

Only seeing a $75 offer for myself and P2. I had just downgraded P2’s BCP a couple of months ago after they refused to give her a retention offer. Wasn’t a big deal since Disover has 5% at grocery stores this quarter. Amusingly, they’re allow me to select that card to upgrade under this offer. Saw the offer in the app under her login but not mine.

I upgraded to Blue Cash Preferred last November, and my original Blue Cash Everyday Card was opened in March many years ago. I expected to get hit by the annual fee this March, but I checked my March statement and didn’t see it. Does the upgrade restart the anniversary clock and I should expect the annual fee this November? Or the annual fee won’t hit until next March, in which case they waive 16 months of annual fee instead of 12 months?

I got this offer today and rep told me if I downgrade before 12 months I will forfeit the 150$ credit. So it’s pointless to since you need to the pay 95$ one way or the other anyway.

Sunny I’ve done this offer four times. If the card is downgraded soon after the annual fee hits, you get a prorated refund so you actually don’t pay much.
A couple of times the 12 months were up before the annual fee hit so I downgraded and paid nothing.

how were the 12 months up even before the annual fee hit?

The annual fee doesn’t hit exactly 12 months after you upgraded. Its charged 1 year after the anniversary date of when you opened the original Blue Cash Everyday Card.
So depending on when you upgrade to the Preferred, you may be able to downgrade before the annual fee hits and the 12 months have passed.

Thanks I went ahead and did the upgrade. My anniversary date is September and I upgraded today, so will I be charged in Dec 24 or Sep 24?

Thanks for the dp on their AF logic
If July is anniversary, will it be better to upgrade in June or after July?

Upgraded several days ago, haven’t got the new card yet. Can I still use the old card while waiting? And would the spending while waiting count towards the spending requirement?

Yes, it did for me (old card worked and it applied full cash back).

“Annual Membership Fee: When you upgrade, your new Card will have a promotional annual fee of $0 for one year. In the first billing period on or after the end of the promotional year, you will be charged a prorated amount of the $95 annual fee for your new Card based on the time remaining until your next account anniversary date. On each account anniversary date thereafter, you will be charged the annual fee for your new Card. If you cancel your Card account or switch to another Card during the one year promotional period, you may no longer remain eligible for this promotion.” Why the first annual fee is prorated? The anniversary date doesn’t start at the time of the upgrade but is carried over from the previous card version? So the bonus is $150 minus first year prorated annual fee (whatever that is, but an amount equal to or smaller than $95) given that you can not downgrade the card until one year later?
