This bonus has expired, if anybody finds a working link then please let us know. You can find the best checking bonuses by clicking here.
Update: Reader BB successfully received the bonus after the below language was added and isn’t a retail store private label credit cardholder. Because of that I am reposting and adding it to our best bonus page again.
I hope all readers have signed up for this bonus already, we’ve given you ample opportunity and warnings. This new deal contains the following language:
This is an exclusive, nontransferable offer. This is only available to Wells Fargo retail store private label credit card customers who received our direct mail for this offer.
Previously it contained similar language (without reference to retail store private label credit card customers) and even those who weren’t targeted received the bonus. There is no guarantee this is the case this time. We will update the bonus once somebody who isn’t targeted gets the bonus (if that happens before the offer expires).Unlike previous offers the above language does appear in the welcome e-mails.

Our Verdict
Update: We now recommend it again after a reader successfully got the bonus.
As I said before, I hope all readers have already signed up for this bonus previously. I suspect you’ll get the bonus even if you’re not a retail store customer, but there is still significant risk involved and you should be aware that you’ll have no recourse if Wells Fargo doesn’t give you the $250 bonus. If I hadn’t already done this bonus, I’d probably just wait for datapoints to roll in. Because of that I don’t consider it one of the best checking account bonuses.
Big thanks to reader, Matthew B who let us know. Learn how to find bonuses and contribute to the site here.

I didn’t receive a tax form for the 250. Called in and the rep is saying the account didn’t receive any interest over 10 dollars. I am confused.
I did this promotion for $250 bonus on personal checking during Mar 2017 and never received 1099 for it. But, got 1099 for $300 bonus with business checking promotion opened during Sep 2017. After few secure messages, WF is saying that bonuses awarded without specific deposit requirements are not considered as interest and will not send 1099 on them. Hopefully they are consistent with this while reporting to IRS as well.
This is hilarious. I opened my account at the end of March and closed my account in June after losing hope of getting the bonus. Then yesterday I received a check from Wells Fargo saying that they determined I was eligible for the bonus after all.
So here’s my DP:
Applied for the WF checking accounts after DOC reported that it appeared the bonus restrictions/fine print not being enforced.
Completed the requirements for a few months waiting on the bonus-saw all the posts re: CFPB complaints, etc., and just decided to close the accounts and chalk it up to “win some, lose some.” No emails sent to WF, no CFPB complaint, etc.! Nothing at all!
Basically put the WF accounts out of my mind. This weekend, received two $250 cashiers checks (one for me, one for spouse) with no cover letter or explanation at all!
Sweet!!!
The explanation letter comes a week later.
Now I am changing my opinion of this bank. I will open (and maybe close) more accounts with WF 😉 Seriously I really did intend keeping my Wells account but because of no bonus payment did close this time, but with the bank admitting its mistake and taking corrective action, it becomes easier to do business with them again in the future.
Same here. After closing our accounts, $500 in the mail between the wife & I, was a very nice surprise indeed. Definitely improves my opinion of WF going forward.
Closed both 2 accounts in July, after fruitlessly requesting the bonus, and getting nowhere. I opened a CFPB complaint for one of them, but not for the other. Regardless, I received the same letter in the mail for both accounts, saying I qualified for the bonus, and they sent me cashiers checks since both accounts were already closed.
I didnt complain to CFPB. But closed account after thier review for bonus came back -ve. Today i got the $250 check in mail. Too back the account is closed now (which would have happened anyway ) :).
I didn’t even file a CFPB complaint but I got the bonus! I’m glad I dragged my feet on closing this account.
So check your accounts people!
same. I did not file cfpb, closed account 2 days back and was cursing the timing when I saw above post…checked account now – though closed, I see the bonus posted. I this I will Bill Pay it away.
To all people who submitted a CFPB complaint, got denied because they were not in targeted group/Wells Fargo does not honor offers found on blog sites and still have the Wells Fargo checking account open, PLEASE CHECK YOUR WELLS FARGO CHECKING ACCOUNT.
I submitted the CFPB on behalf of two relatives few weeks ago. Both got denial letters from Wells Fargo. However, both got $250 bonus posted today.
07/31/17 New Acct Bonus Retail Service Promotion $250.00
Came here to give an update on this too.
Complained twice to CFPB but shot down both times. Today I see the bonus posted.
all is well that ends well
Looks like WF no longer counts refilling your Amazon Gift Card acct with your WF debit card as a debit transaction. This worked fine for several months (did 10 small payments to meet 10 debit purchases/month) but this month they suddenly stopped counting so I got hit with $10 service fee.
counted for me. no monthly charges.
Check your statement. It should tell you on there for each of the 3 possible requirements (10 transactions, $500 deposit, $1500 balance) how much of that requirement you fulfilled. What does your deposits say? Is it 0 or of 10, or like 9 out of 10? Is it possible that one of your transactions posted at the wrong time and fell outside of the statement window (ie did you do 10 that month, but only 9 made it onto that statement)?
Or did you make multiple transactions on one day and amazon lumped multiple together into a single transaction (I’ve never seen amazon do that, but I suppose its possible)?
Otherwise I have a hard time seeing how they could disqualify those purchases, as there was no specific terms about it:
“10 or more posted debit card purchases/payments from this checking account (this includes posted debit card purchases or posted debit card payments of bills from this checking account, but does not include transactions at the ATM);”
Bonus denied. Same reason of I wasn’t in targeted group and that they don’t honor offers found on blog sites. LOL 😁.
Can I open another CFPB complaint with email of bonus qualification attached? I see someone above did that and got “exception”
Might be worth trying
Just got bonus today. Was shot down twice, even after submitting emails. but bonus appeared magically today!
Good news, glad to hear it.
I did attach the email to CFPB complaint and got the same result – no bonus, so it’s a waste of time in my opinion
Wells Fargo is claiming that my green card holding wife won’t receive her signup bonus “due to IRS reporting rules” because her SSN “isn’t verified” despite her receiving other bank signup bonuses in the past. I’m going to see if she can file a CFPB complaint…
